Hello Folks!!

We all are in contact with children, maybe directly or indirectly.  This post aims to provide awareness about myths relate to speech and language disorders.

Now the question is why is it important to know about these myths?

It is important because belief in these restrict parents/ guardians to take action on time which further wore the condition by widening the gap between age and appropriate development.

So here are 5 common myths………………..

Myth 1: Children will have a delay because their parents had delays as children.

Truth: This happens only in case of genetic disorders or Children born with any medical condition.

Example: Down Syndrome or Cerebral Palsy.

Myth 2: In the case of tongue-tie children won’t be able to speak up.

Truth: Tongue-tie restricts the production of few sounds only which again depends upon the severity of it.

Example of sounds: /l/, /t/, /d/.

Myth 3: It is ok not to speak up to the age of 2 years.

Truth: The majority of the children speak their first meaningful word by their first birthday.

Example: /mama/ for own mother.

Myth 4: All kinds of speech and language disorders have visible symptoms.

Truth: Most speech and language disorders don’t have prominent symptoms.

Example: Autism and Congenital Hearning loss

Myth 5: Boys speak bit late compares to girls.

Truth:  This one is true actually as research also support this howeverother side of the story is boys are more prone to speech and language disorders.
